San Diego's Alpine Library Receives Several Awards and Achievements

March 2, 2018

San Diego County Alpine Library

The County of San Diego’s Alpine Branch Library is the first library to achieve Zero Energy (ZNE) certification through the International Living Future Institute. To achieve ZNE certification, the library includes a variety of energy efficient technologies and on-site renewable energy including a 72-kW photovoltaic system, the 6th largest array of any ZNE certified project. The building also achieved USGBC LEED Gold New Construction Certification.

The Alpine Library was also awarded a 2018 National Award of Merit in the Civic/Assembly category from the Design-Build Institute of America. The award showcases how the project team went well above and beyond achieving cost, schedule, and quality goals, demonstrating unique applications of design-build best practices to raise the bar. The merit award also automatically nominates the project for the National Award of Excellence in the Civic/Assembly category, the highest honor within the category.

An important gathering place for 3,000 weekly visitors, the Alpine Library includes a resource room, areas for children, teens, and adults, a computer lab, staff offices, workrooms, and an outdoor Poet’s Patio, overlooking an adjacent park. Hope-Amundson (now part of Coffman Engineers) provided structural engineering services for this one-story, 13,000-square-foot steel-framed structure with lateral resistance braced frames. The building structure features a unique roof comprised of multiple planes with varying slopes.

The Alpine Branch Library was featured as a Case Study for High Performance Buildings on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy website where it can serve as a prototype for future projects throughout the region.
