Eastern Washington University Red Turf Field

Eastern Washington University (EWU) generated national media attention around their new, first of its kind, artificial field featuring red turf. “Roos Field” was renamed in honor of former EWU football player, and NFL star, Michael Roos and his wife Katherine Roos, who donated $500,000 for the privately supported project. Coffman provided civil engineering and project management services to design the facility that included intricate field grading and a complete sub-surface drainage system. The stadium that was originally constructed in 1967 using natural grass was upgraded to artificial turf during the 2010 renovation.

The artificial turf provided a safe and low maintenance surface and environmental benefits by eliminating the need for fertilizer and irrigation and reducing water use by 300,000 gallons per year saving an estimated $12,000 annually in the field maintenance. The red turf provided something unique that EWU Eagles fans and players can be proud of for years to come.
