Hyatt Regency Portland at Oregon Convention Center

As a result of the partnership between Metro, the Oregon Convention Center, Hyatt Corporation, and Mortenson Development, the new 600-room Hyatt Regency Hotel is attracting major events, boosting tourism, and creating new jobs in Downtown Portland. Coffman was proud to be part of the design-build delivery team, led by Mortenson Construction and ESG Architects, providing fire protection engineering services for the new full-service, high-rise hotel and mechanical engineering services for the associated parking garage located adjacent to the Oregon Convention Center.

Coffman worked closely with the architect to develop a movable rolling fire-wall solution to achieve the client’s vision for an open concept, continuous flow, three-story podium while meeting code requirements. In addition, our team strategically incorporated the room supply and exhaust into the smoke control system, lessening the number of required dampers from approximately 500 to 50 — saving the client $1M in addition to long-term building maintenance costs. The Hyatt Regency Hotel opened on schedule with its first reservations in December 2019 and will boost tourism and the economy for years to come.
