Northwood Middle School was over 50 years old before it was decided that the students and teachers in the Mead School District in Spokane, Washington needed something new. Coffman is no stranger to school expansions and renovations and provided structural and electrical engineering design services for the facility. The expansion provides some much needed space and will better serve the over 900 students and faculty occupying the building.
Coffman provided structural and electrical engineering for approximately 104,000 sf of new expansion and 17,000 sf of renovated space. Expansion includes 2 stories of classrooms as well as mechanical mezzanine level, incorporating a mixture of steel, masonry and concrete framing, bracing and shear walls. Steel beams with concrete slab on deck were utilized for elevated floor framing. Also included are a CMU gym with steel joist roof, locker rooms, and two-story vaulted music rooms and common spaces. Renovated space include an existing gym and vocational tech classroom spaces.
